How to Calculate Concrete Cubic Yards Without Ordering Twice

The most common mistake in residential concrete work is not bad finishing, it is bad math. A homeowner measures a patio, calls the ready-mix plant, and orders a truck. The truck arrives, empties into the forms, and comes up short. Now you are standing in wet concrete with a finisher on the clock, trying to reach a second dispatcher who can send another half-yard. That second pour costs you roughly three times per cubic yard what the first one did.

The math to avoid that is not complicated. What confuses most first-time pours is the unit conversion from feet of depth to cubic yards of volume, and the real-world waste factor that nobody prints on the inputs to a concrete calculator. Let us walk through it with the numbers that matter.

The formula, with the unit trap

Volume in cubic yards = (length × width × depth) ÷ 27, where every dimension is in feet. The conversion factor of 27 exists because a cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft. The trap is depth: slab thickness is almost always specified in inches. Four inches is 0.333 ft, not 4. Six inches is 0.5 ft. Plugging a raw inch value into a cubic-yard formula will overstate your order by a factor of 12, enough to get laughed at by the dispatcher.

Why depth dominates the budget

Length and width are what you see. Depth is what you pay for. Compare two driveways, both 20 ft × 10 ft:

  • At 4 inches thick: 20 × 10 × 0.333 ÷ 27 = 2.47 cubic yards
  • At 5 inches thick: 20 × 10 × 0.417 ÷ 27 = 3.09 cubic yards
  • At 6 inches thick: 20 × 10 × 0.5 ÷ 27 = 3.70 cubic yards

Moving from a 4-inch to a 6-inch pour adds 50% to your concrete bill. The American Concrete Institute recommends 4 inches for sidewalks and patios, 5 inches for passenger-vehicle driveways, and 6 inches for RV pads or anything that will see regular truck traffic. If your city has freeze-thaw cycles, bump up one level.

Waste factors, spillage, and the 3% rule

Ready-mix plants will quote you the exact yards you ask for, to the nearest quarter-yard. Real-world conditions consume more than that. Forms flex. Ground settles under the weight. The last chute of the truck always leaves some residue behind. Contractors budget 5% extra on rectangular slabs and 10% on footings and curved work. That is enough margin for the 3% rule concrete finishers use: three percent overage at the start of the pour beats being three percent short at the end.

When bagged concrete beats ready-mix

Ready-mix is almost always cheaper per cubic yard, around $150-220 per yard in most U.S. markets as of late 2025, versus $250-300 per yard in equivalent bagged volume. But short-load fees flip the economics at the small end. An 80-lb bag of QUIKRETE yields 0.6 cubic feet of placed concrete, or about 45 bags per cubic yard. For pours under one cubic yard, fence-post footings, small pads, small steps - bagged is simpler, cheaper, and does not require a truck to show up in your driveway at 7 a.m.

Checklist before you call the plant

  • Measure length and width in feet to the nearest half-foot.
  • Convert depth from inches to feet (inches ÷ 12) before multiplying.
  • Divide the cubic-foot product by 27.
  • Add 5% for slabs on prepared ground, 10% for footings or irregular shapes.
  • Round up to the nearest quarter-yard, plants will not deliver fractional increments smaller than that.
  • Ask about short-load fees if your order is under 3 yards.
