Definition
Customary gratuity rates in the United States vary by service type. Sit-down restaurants: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good, 20%+ for excellent, calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. Delivery drivers: 15-20% with a $3-5 minimum for small orders. Hairstylists, barbers, and rideshare drivers: 15-20%. Bartenders: $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of the tab. Hotel housekeeping: $2-5 per night, left daily rather than at checkout. Tipping norms differ sharply outside the U.S.; Japan and South Korea do not tip at all, while many European countries include service charges on the bill.
