Unit Price

Updated 2025-10-23

Definition

The cost per standard unit of measurement, per ounce, per pound, per sheet, per liter, used to compare products across different package sizes. A 32 oz bottle of shampoo at $12.99 has a unit price of $0.41/oz; the same brand in a 16 oz bottle at $7.49 costs $0.47/oz, making the larger size 13% cheaper per ounce. Most U.S. state laws require grocery shelves to display unit prices under weights-and-measures regulations, though studies from Cornell show shoppers use unit prices only about 30% of the time.
